James Guthrie opened his solicitors office in Portland Street, Kilmarnock over 120 years ago. In 1978 James Guthrie & Co moved to its present location at 3 Portland Road, Kilmarnock from which the tradition set down by Mr Guthrie of providing expert legal advice and first class client care continues.
Today we are fully equipped with the latest technology to meet the requirements of our clients’ business in the 21st century.

Meet The Team
Alison Kelly
Solicitor/Partner
Alison joined the firm as a trainee in 1992 and became a Partner in 1998. Over the years she has advised in many different areas of the law. The majority of her work now is dealing with Adults with Incapacity cases, covering Welfare and Financial Guardianship applications, and she is also Financial Guardian to a number of incapacitated adults. She has a substantial chambers practice dealing with wills, powers of attorney and executry matters. Alison sits as a Legal Member on the First-tier Tribunal for Scotland (Housing and Property Chamber). She is Clerk to the local Faculty of Solicitors, and Treasurer of Kilmarnock Business Association.
Scott Gow
Solicitor/Partner
Scott joined the firm as a trainee in 1997 and became a partner in 2002.
He has extensive experience in all aspects of property law. He acts for both individuals and businesses in the sale and purchase of property as well as both residential and commercial leasing. He is a tutor in Conveyancing and Property Law at the University of Glasgow.
Sarah Simpson
Solicitor/Associate
Sarah joined the firm in 2003 and was made an Associate in 2006. She has wide experience in family law advising clients on divorce, separation, cohabitation, contact and residence matters. Sarah now focuses predominantly on private client work, assisting clients with Wills, Powers of Attorney and Executry Administration. Sarah is a member of the Society of Trusts and Executry Practitioners (STEP) after being awarded the STEP Diploma in Trusts and Estates Scotland with Distinction in 2019.
Emma Cowie
Solicitor
Emma joined the firm in July 2021 as a Solicitor in our Conveyancing Department, having previously worked in two large conveyancing firms in Glasgow where she gained experience in all aspects of residential conveyancing throughout Scotland. Emma qualified in 2018, having graduated from the University of Strathclyde in 2008, and completing her Diploma of Professional Legal Practice in 2014. Emma has worked in customer service for over 20 years and has a strong client focus.
James McMillan
Trainee Solicitor
James joined the firm in August 2021 as a Trainee Solicitor in our conveyancing and executry departments.
James Graduated from the University of Strathclyde with an honours degree in Scots and English Law in 2020, before completing his Diploma of Professional Legal Practice the following year. Prior to his studies in law, James also graduated from the University of Strathclyde with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business.
In his spare time, James enjoys watching and playing Football and Golf, as well as socialising with family and friends.
Lorna MacGregor
Conveyancing Paralegal/Practice Manager
Lorna joined the firm in 1995. She studied at Strathclyde University in 2003 to become a Conveyancing Paralegal and qualified in 2004.
She has gained experience in all aspects of residential conveyancing including purchase, sales, remortgaging and equity release. She is also able to advise and assist in relation to residential Leasing.
Lyn Smith
Executry Paralegal
Lyn joined the firm in 1989. She studied at Strathclyde University in 2003 to become an Executry Paralegal and qualified in 2004.
Lyn is very experienced in all aspects of executry administration. She is also able to advise and assist in relation to Wills.
Lauren Duffy
Family Law Paralegal
Lauren joined the firm in 2012. She studied to become a Family Law Paralegal in 2015 and qualified in 2016. As well as Family Law she is experienced in dealing with Adults with Incapacity matters covering Welfare and Financial Guardianship Applications, Powers of Attorney and Wills.
